On 14th October 2013, Mr. Shigenobu Kobayashi, the Charge d’ Affaires at the Embassy of Japan in Malawi handed over 23 boreholes. The occasion was graced by Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda, the State President of the Republic of Malawi.

On 18th March, 2013, the Government of Japan and the Gift of the Givers Foundation Malawi signed a grant contract amounting to USD90, 611 (about K30.4 million) under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects for the implementation of the Project for Supply of Safe and Potable Water targeting 18 villages in 5 Traditional Authorities in Balaka District. Prior to project implementation women would wake up as early at 4am and walk over 3km to the nearest borehole and wait on long queues to fetch water.

The project has led to the construction of 23 boreholes in order to improve access to safe and potable water. This will contribute to the reduction of water borne diseases like diarrhea and dysentery in the area. Women and girls will walk shorter distance to a safe and potable water source. A total number of 13 000 people are expected to benefit from the project.
